In India, we are often asked when is the best time to view the Northern Lights, and fortunately for us, there is many interesting people who want to go to Norway to see this Northern or Aurora Lights.
In practice, in northern Norway, Iceland, Greenland & Finland, you may need to plan your Northern Lights tour between the period starting at the beginning of September and extending until the middle of April.
However, if the Northern Lights are strong enough, you may see them against a twilight sky, and it is not unusual to see them from Tromsø on an August evening.
People think cold is the best time for Northern Lights or Aurora Lights but if fact you dose not need cold you need dark and fresh sky to see Northern Light.
Although October and November can be stormy, particularly along the coast, they are generally good months. From December, the weather starts up to dry up and snow generally covers the landscape. To Creating the perfect picture for white Christmas and winter wonderland, the snow provides the travellers for the opportunity to combine your Aurora Borealis search with fun adventure activities, such as dog sledding, skiing and reindeer sledding.
Bear in mind that during the darkest part of winter from December to early January, you may only have a few hours of daylight with extended dawns and dusks.
Keep in mind that December isn’t the best time, because popular Northern Lights destinations like Tromsø, Norway and Kiruna, Sweden has about 70% probable chance of precipitation each day during the month of December. Precipitation means cloud cover, and because of cloud cover that makes spotting that Northern Lights extremely difficult or sometime often impossible.
Between the autumn and spring that is from 21 September to 21 March, the Aurora lights are at their most frequent. To see the lights, it needs to be dark and cold with as little cloud as possible. Check out the daily Aurora Sighting website here to see how the Aurora is fairing this week.
So, You have an equal chance of seeing the Northern lights any month during the winter, it is just that some months which are more 'visitor friendly'. During the darker months from November to December and January, you often see only a blue twilight that usually only one active adventure during the day fits in. Late January, and February and March offer longer daylight hours, thus more pleasant for venturing out for winter adventures such as snow mobile riding and dog sledding. The day-light lasts longer later in the season, allowing for more outdoor fun in the snow. Having said this, regardless of the daylight hours, we also recommend for also including a Northern Lights evening adventure during your stay - this can be as more comfortable as putting on warm outfits and walking to a viewing area with a warm fire and hot chocolates or an evening Northern Lights Chase by car.
